The right running shoes are the key to safe, joyous training and short recovery because they are intended to reduce the load on the ankles, knees, and spine - the body parts that experience the most stress. The outsoles of cheap running shoes, casual sneakers, and other footwear not designed for running are often too stiff to provide comfort. The best running shoes have an anatomical shape and reinforced amortization, which helps to distribute the weight and absorb shock. In such shoes, the touch-down will be soft and comfortable, and you won’t risk twisting your leg. Now, let’s consider what makes good running shoes.

How to Choose Good Running Sneakers?

Cushioning. Compared to walkers, runners impact the ground with more force. This impact creates a shock that resonates through the entire body, which leads to discomfort. Heel and forefoot cushioning absorbs a portion of the shock and makes the rest of it as gradually-going and mild as possible.

Stability. Your sneakers for running should keep your feet stable. To achieve that, they may use padded ankle collars, heel counters (a semi-flexible cup inside the rearfoot that supports and centers your heel), and a snug saddle that locks the heel in place. Also, pay attention to the heel-toe drop - the difference in the sole height between the heel and the forefoot. There’s no right amount of drop for everyone. It depends on what part of your foot you land. Usually, a drop of 7mm and more is best for runners who land heel first, while a drop of 0-6mm will suit athletes landing on the front or middle of the foot.

Grip. Depending on where you run, you need a good grip on surfaces. Track running shoes with durable rubber coating on the sole are suitable for running at the stadium or gym. Running in the park and slightly rugged terrain will require road running shoes with a grooved sole. Choose waterproof trail running shoes with deeply corrugated soles for heavily rugged terrain.

Size. Like any other footwear, running shoes need to be comfortable. Generally speaking, you need shoes with a little extra space in the toe area but a snug fit in the midfoot and especially heel areas. Your toes shouldn’t rub against the sides, and the heel shouldn’t slip back and forth when moving.
