Thermal Vision

Thermal vision helps to detect and track prey in low light, or in difficult conditions. The principle of operation of all thermal vision scopes is the visualization of infrared radiation from objects on the screen. The difference in temperature between the surface and the background creates a visible image on the display. People, animals, and relief details are clearly visible on it. The device resembles a conventional video camera. The difference is that heat is recorded instead of light.

Thermal vision lenses are made from germanium because ordinary glass does not transmit infrared rays. The optics of the devices are black and have a characteristic shine. Germanium lenses are coated with diamond-like carbon to protect them against mechanical damage. Diamond-like carbon is a thin and very durable material.

A thermal hunting vision device can detect not only prey but also the heat trail of a recently passed animal, even through branches or trees. The device works in low light, complete darkness, and in bad weather conditions such as fog, rain, and snow.

The device reacts to the temperature of objects, so it does not cause any harm to humans. You need to use it in a horizontal plane, holding it not below the waist in order to get the effective action of the device. Periodically, LED bulbs will light up on it, which means that the heat source has already been detected by the device. The more flashes, the higher the radiation intensity.

How to choose a thermal vision scope?

The matrix determines the clarity of the picture, the temperature threshold, and the degree of inaccuracy. Today you can find devices with the highest matrix resolution which is 640x480 and the smallest one which is 160x120 pixels. Matrix resolution does not affect the size of the device.

It’s better to purchase a device with multiple interchangeable lenses in order to change them according to the circumstances. The wider the angle of view, the shorter the maximum distance at which the subject is visible.

Frame rate is especially important in dynamic surveillance. 60 frames per second are required so that the picture does not slow down or freeze. The functionality of modern models provides the hunter with a lot of possibilities such as laser designator, illumination, and digital zoom. Moreover, the recording can be saved and then transferred to external media.

It is important to protect hunting gear, that is why the devices are manufactured to be resistant to moisture and dust. A thermal scope isn't afraid of temperature extremes.
