Head

Some adapt to the circumstances, and some change them because they don’t want to adapt. Luckily, it takes both sorts to make the world. The innovators move the progress so that the rest of the people might enjoy the fruits of their labor. It is the unwillingness to put up with the given (paired with an exceptional stubbornness) that drove Howard Head, the founder of the Head Company, to create an innovative pair of skis, that marked a new chapter in his life and life of the skiing industry.

The story was as follows: an aircraft engineer and an extremely sociable person, Howard Head, tried skiing. No failures on the slopes could stop him from falling in love with the sport, so he became dedicated to mastering it. Like many novices, he blamed poor equipment for his unsuccessful performance, but unlike the majority of skiers, he could offer a solution. It was mid-40-s, and skis were long, heavy, clumsy, and made from hickory wood, which turned out to be not the best material for the case. Rather than mastering traditional skies, Head decided to construct new ones, lighter and more efficient, utilizing aircraft manufacturing techniques. Others have tried making metal skis and failed, but Head’s design was more intricate. 1947 marked the birth of the innovative “honeycomb” skis, constructed from two layers of aluminum bonded to plywood sidewalls with honeycomb plastic core. 1950 was the year the Head Ski Company was founded. Though it took years of diligent promotion, Head skis managed to become a status symbol product. To this day, Head continues to push the limits by implementing innovative technologies. 

Head has gone beyond the skis-only approach and produces a full range of skiing equipment.

They were the first of their kind, and they remain the first among many. Skis are Head’s signature product, which brought the brand its fame. Over the decades, many designs were developed, each fit for a particular type of skiing, including race skis, all-mountain skis, freestyle skis, freeride skis, you name it - Head covers everything there is to cover.
