Started by three passionate fly fishing enthusiasts, Leon Martuch, Clare Harris, and Paul Rottiers, in 1945, Scientific Anglers was ahead of the curve, introducing state-of-the-art fly lines to the market. The spread of industrialization made possible the creation of fly line designs that would ease the fishing process and make it a joyous activity.
Scientific Anglers Innovations
In 1952, the company revolutionized the industry with the first plastic-coated tapered lines that boasted superior floating capabilities to the silk lines, which, among other things, required extensive drying after a few hours of use. The new design was high-floating, low-maintenance, and durable.
In 1954, the company launched Air Cel, widely considered the first floating fly line. A few years later, the new Air Cel Supreme fly lines entered the market. They utilized microballoons that improved the line floating capabilities. In 1960, the industry got another invention from Scientific Anglers, the Wet Cel sinking lines. Several years later, the design was improved as the company began to use powdered tungsten. Tungsten-based lines sank faster and, compared to lead-based lines, were environmentally friendly.
The company also contributed to the industry development by introducing unique taper profiles that offered better castability and superior performance with larger flies. In 1966, Scientific Anglers created the first shooting lines.
In 1988, SA began to use silicone to improve slickness. The technology was so successful that it spread among the other fly line brands and became an industry standard. A decade later, Scientific Anglers introduced the proprietary Advanced Shooting Technology (AST) that set a standard for the slickness and durability of fly fishing lines.
Another vivid advancement was the Sharkskin Technology which reduced friction. As a result, the line floated higher, lasted longer, and shot further.
Scientific Anglers Today
Today, Scientific Anglers fly lines are justly considered one of the world’s most advanced lines. The introduction of the SharkWave in 2014 was the climax of the company's development. It was the world’s first triple-colored and triple-textured fly line.
