Jim called his brainchild "The Oakley Grip", starting to sell handles in the trunk of his own car. The starting capital was only $300.

The first prototypes left much to be desired, as the young entrepreneur did not know the specifics of production. However, by 1980, Jim finally produced the first Oakley glasses called O-Frames. The model became a hit since the innovator put the Oakley logo on the strap. The marketing ploy laid the foundation for the future success of the brand.

Oakley sports glasses appeared in 1983. A year later, the first model for cyclists, Factory Pilot Eyeshade was released. It revolutionized the sports world. The sunglasses were worn by Greg Lemond during his Tour de France victory. After that, Oakley became one of the best-selling brands in its segment.
