What do you need to found a company? The Outback Trading’s founder, Wilson King, would answer that one man, one horse, and one duster is enough. Every business can be considered an adventure, but a true journey took place right before the foundation of Outback Trading Company.
The journey began with a trip to Japan that changed King’s worldview and inspired the Pennsylvania farm boy to set off on a one-year journey across Korea, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Australia. Having nothing but thirty dollars to his name, Wilson bought two broken motorcycles to merge them into one and continue his adventure in Australia. He was given a gift at one of his stops, a gift of oilskin duster, that would become extremely important later in the story. Once he returned to America in 1978, Wilson had no idea what he was going to do with his life. He took his horse and went on another trip through the Brandywine Valley when a sudden downpour caught him off guard. But he wasn’t startled, for his loyal duster was always with him. The idea that he would have drenched in rain but for the duster inspired King to contact the manufacturers. The first bunch of Oilskin dusters was sold out of Wilson's car.
