Tom Matthews spent part of the 1993 season hunting from a custom-made blind boat on the Mississippi River. However, instead of making custom blinds for specific boats, he wanted to make one that would be suitable for everyone. He invented a blind that can quickly be set up, disassembled, and that can perfectly hide the hunters and their boats.
At that time there was nothing of the sort. In fact, there was nothing on the market for duck hunting besides the most common and basic waterfowl accessories such as lcalls. So he and Allen Hughes, along with Tate Wood, spent weekends and evenings over the next few months building the blind that met their standards.
Three men were convinced they were on the right path to success, so Hughes quit his job as a bond broker to focus all his energy on the company. So did Wood, the insurance specialist. Matthews, who worked in real estate, had already retired. They named their company Avery Outdoors and set about developing Avery hunting gear based on their experience as duck hunters.
