Alpine Skiing
If you’ve found yourself on this page, congratulations, you either already knew that there are different types of skiing or wanted to get skiing gear to conquer the Alps. Both of those things deserve praise, and here it is: Keep it up! We, in turn, offer you equipment to experience alpine skiing firsthand.
Can alpine skiing take place anywhere else but the Alps? Yes, it can. It’s less about the place and more about the style. What is the other style, you might wonder? Well, here’s the quick guide to skiing styles.
Nordic style
The nordic style was the first one to be born. This type has roots in the area currently known as Norway, the land that has always been known for its cold climate. No wonder that local people were among the first ones to master the skiing technique to traverse vast snowy areas. Nordic skiing involves using long skis and poles to push, glide and grab through the snow. Such a style is more suitable for long-distance traveling. Nordic boots are made from soft and flexible materials to remain warm but lightweight. They are also only fixed in the front, leaving the heel unattached. Nordic skis tend to be longer and narrower than other types to assist in cutting through the snow and staying on top of it.
Alpine style
Also known as downhill skiing, this is the most widespread style that you are likely to see at every ski resort. The equipment needed for alpine skiing is pretty much the same as for the nordic one: skis, boots, and poles. The design is what distinguishes these two styles. Alpine skis are equipped with metal edges, allowing for better high-speed turns. The boots are way more rigid and sturdy than nordic ones, and they are fixed on both ends to prevent the user from falling over at high speed and to improve maneuvering ability. It’s a common thing to use snowboards for the same purposes, as they rely on the kinetic force of the descent and can be maneuvered without using poles.
Now that everybody is well-aware of the differences, it’s time to talk about equipment. As you know, the gear for nordic and alpine skiing is different, and this is the Alpine section. Here you can find all alpine equipment you need for comfortable downhill skiing, including:
Skis with metal edges, created specifically for alpine skiing.
Ski poles to help you maneuver and control your turns.
Snowboards for those who prefer to carry one piece of equipment instead of two.
Ski bindings to hold you tight on your slope-conqueror.
Ski pants, gloves, and boots to keep you warm and safe.
Ski goggles to protect you from snow and sun glare messing with your eyes.
Here, on Gritr Outdoors, you can find everything you need for alpine skiing and snowboarding.
